AUSTRALIAN ARMY CADET UNIT
The Werribee Secondary College Army Cadet Unit is in its 3rd year of operation at the school. It is one of only three Army Cadet Units in government schools in Victoria, the others being Melbourne High School and Sebastopol College, the vast majority of units being in private schools.
The Australian Army Cadets is a youth group run by the Department of Defence. Cadets gain valuable leadership skills, which will enhance the personal development of a young person. These leadership skills are highly regarded by employers. Involvement in the Australian Army Cadets would also be a great advantage if seeking to enter the Australian Defence Force (ADF) at any time in the future.
Other activities undertaken by cadets include participating in and learning about: bush survival, first aid, field craft, abseiling, navigation, marksmanship, field engineering, ceremonial drill, participating in community events e.g. ANZAC Day parade, Remembrance Day, military history and communications. From these activities they will also develop confidence, practical skills and greater sense of community, all of which will hold them in good stead for the rest of their lives.
The unit parades on Monday evenings from 1800-2030 hours and day and weekend activities are held at other times throughout the year.
History of the Unit
Development work on our cadet unit commenced in June 2007, the College Council approving the cadet concept at the school in November 2007. In August 2009 staff and cadets commenced training as members of the AAC.
In February 2010, the Chief of Staff offered the College the opportunity to become a pilot school to trial a draft process for raising new Army Cadet units. Thereafter the formal application and associated processes commenced. There were further hurdles to cross especially associated with the OHS issues bridging Federal, State and Defence Force requirements.
In 2010 and 2011 Allan and Maryanne Sterling also undertook the comprehensive training required to become officers of cadets resulting in appointment as 2LT(AAC).
On 7 March 2011, the then commander of the AAC, BRIG Withers issued a directive formally raising a cadet unit at Werribee Secondary College. Development and growth of the Unit has occurred during 2011 and 2012.
On the 4th March 2012, the Unit was formally inaugurated by the Hon. Julia Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia.
